Michael Horch has been head of the kernPack business unit since 1 April. In addition to his work as Area Manager, he is responsible for the worldwide sales of intralogistics solutions and packaging Systems. He is supported by Bruno Guanziroli, Head of Marketing and Sales.

Kern was in the final of Switzerlands leading technology prize.
Around sixty start-ups, established companies as well as educational and research institutions applied for the Swiss Technology Award 2021, nine have reached the final. We are proud to be among them.
On 18 November, we were able to present our innovative packaging system in the category ‘Innovation Leaders’ to a top-class audience at the Swiss Innovation Forum 2021 in Basel. We were very much looking forward to this unique experience and the exchange with other innovative minds during the conference day.
The Swiss Technology Award is the most important award for innovation and technology transfer in Switzerland. Every year, the prize is awarded to the most outstanding technology-based innovations and developments in the categories ‘Inventors’, ‘Start-ups (Rising Stars)’ and ‘Innovation Leaders’. This year it will be awarded for the 33rd time.

The Hall of Fame of the best innovations in packaging has been enriched by 15 outstanding solutions. The Gold Awards were announced on 28 September 2021 during the FACHPACK trade fair. With the Gold Awards, the independent jury of the international German Packaging Award honours particularly ground-breaking innovations from among the packaging award winners.
Kern AG award winner in the category packaging machines with PackOnTime 2box
The prize was awarded for a patented packaging solution for shipping boxes, implemented in a highly flexible packaging system. The system determines the packaging volume based on the packaged goods geometry, selects the suitable corrugated board blank from a stock of different sizes, cuts, perforates and creases it individually, erects the blank, fills and seals it.

Innovative brilliance: the winners of the German Packaging Award 2021
Green Business Award - the most important environmental accolade in Switzerland.
Sustainable and successful. Is that possible? Yes! Kern clearly demonstrated this with their on-demand packaging system as this year's finalist of the "Green Business Award". Because clever packaging is all-important when it comes to online shopping.
Online trade is booming. Even more so since the outbreak of the Coronavirus crisis. Not only books, clothes and the like are delivered to the living room - but also oversized parcels and plastic filling material. Kern AG, a family-owned company in Berne, decided that this was unnecessary and looked for alternatives. Three years ago, the idea became a concrete packaging system: "PackOnTime 2box produces customised packages that do not require any packaging material at all". In a fully automated process, the goods are measured, and the data forwarded. The machine produces a matching package from recycled corrugated cardboard. And it does so every seven seconds. The sustainable benefits are obvious: smaller packages, less volume, fewer trucks on the road. And the end customer does not have to deal with harmful filling material.
Together with two other finalists, the kernPack team went through a careful selection process and was allowed to present their solution to the audience during the Circular Economy Entrepreneur Conference (CE²) in mid-September 2021 at the Kursaal Bern. We are proud to be among the top three of 40 companies that combine economic success with ecological impact. There can only be one winner: In the end, the Designwerk Group went home as winner with its Futuricum electric trucks. Nevertheless, the team is proud of what they achieved in this important competition.

Thanks to a new packaging system from the Bernese region, parcel shipping is now more efficient and sustainable. With this innovative investment, Coop is further expanding its logistics centre in Jegenstorf and thus responding to the growth in online trading.
Kern is pleased to support Reclameland's shipping logistics
With the new fully automated packaging system PackOnTime 2box, Reclameland saves a lot of time, cardboard and space in the trucks. The purchase of the packaging system will speed up the production process by 300%. Where previously up to 2,000 orders per day were processed, the system is now able to pack up to 6,000 orders per day.
Reclameland in Westerbroek in Groningen is the fastest growing online printing company in the Netherlands. The print shop was founded in 2008 by the Groningen entrepreneur Wouter Haan and has been number two in the market since 2015. Reclameland is renowned for producing all its print products in-house.

PackOnTime 2box wins “LogiMAT BEST PRODUCT 2020” Award
The innovative PackOnTime 2box Multi Format Packaging System operates with sustainable recycled corrugated cardboard and eliminates the need for additional filling material. Orders of all kind are measured in a 3D process and then inserted into the tailor-made box. Kern’s innovation was awarded “LogiMAT BEST PRODUCT 2020” in the “Identification, Packaging and Loading technology, Load securing” category.
On Tuesday 10th March 2020, the Swiss family-owned company Kern AG received the prize for “LogiMAT BEST PRODUCT 2020“. The award honours innovative products that demonstrably contribute to increased efficiency, cost-savings and rationalisation. “We are very pleased to receive this coveted award in the intralogistics sector“, said the kernPack team. An independent jury of experts consisting of representatives from business, research and the trade press had selected PackOnTime 2box from numerous well-known applicants.
